Tel Dan - the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel, belonging to the Tribe of Dan

The historical site: After Solomon, Israel split into two kingdoms. The Northern Kingdom was ;left without the holy temple at Jerusalem and wanted to prevent their people from having to go to Jerusalem to worship. One of their replacement worship sites was at Dan. Although they were worshiping idols at this site, some of the physical set ups, like the altar, was copied from the temple at Jerusalem. Since Solomon's temple was later destroyed by the Babylonians, the original altar was lost, so this contemporary replica is very significant.
